L.A. Beer Week kicks off on Sept. 19 (labeerweek.com).
To those aficionados of food, beer and L.A. culture, clear your calendars. From Sept. 19-29, there is a full schedule of cultural celebrations taking place for Los Angeles Beer Week. Started in 2009 by beer enthusiasts from Los Angeles and Orange County, this festival (LABW) has turned into a major must-attend event for So Cal citizens.

Though the actual celebration events start on Sept. 19, on Sept. 22, there will be an opening gala for LABW which will be held at Los Angeles’ iconic Union Station. More than 50 breweries, including AleSmith, Firestone Walker, New Belgium, Noble Ale Works and Stone Brewing Co. will be in attendance for the event, which will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 3 p.m.

The kick-off festival event this year is taking place in San Diego at the Verdugo Bar on Sept. 19. Their taplist is filled with rare and unique beers such as Ruination IPA with Grapefruit, 2010 Old Guardian Barley Wine aged in White Wine Barrels and Farking Wheaton wootstout. For $40, you can test out these brews, celebrate the beginning of a great festival and also receive six tasting tickets and a souvenir glass.

For those who are fond of the combination of beer and karaoke, Sept. 20 may be your favorite day of the festival. The Melody Lounge in L.A. is hosting their Brewers Karaoke Championship. Brewers and staff will be in attendance from Eagle Rock Brewery, Noble Ale Works, Stone Brewing and many more to witness the brewaoke. The winner gets a tiara and craft beer – what more could you ask for?

If you want to burn off some of those beer calories, then Sept. 21 will be a good day for you to attend.  The 2nd Annual Orange County Fest of Ales and Beer Run 5K is happening in Downtown Anaheim. Food trucks, live music and more than 80 craft beers on tap will be available to those willing to participate in this fun mix of exercise and alcohol.

Fast-forward a few days and sign up for the Craftsman Beer Dinner on Sept. 25. This event will take place at Maximilano Restaurant in Los Angeles. The dinner will be a five-course meal prepared by Chef Andre Guerrero, and the specialty mix of prime meat and craft beer is one that you will not one to miss.

Another event to mix delicious food will take place at Boneyard Bistro’s Beer & Whiskey Brunch in Sherman Oaks. The restaurant teamed up with Firestone Walker, Ballast Point and Deschutes to make a six-course beer brunch to take place on Sept. 29. There will also be whiskey pairings available, making this a perfect event to close out the week.

Los Angeles Beer Week is a non-profit event and is used as a way to promote different beer enterprises, whether they are up-and-coming businesses or veterans of the beer trade. LABW has also gained sponsorship from organization such as the Spero Foundation, which donated $10,000 last year; the Real Medicine Foundation; Glassel Park Community Recreation Center, which donated $2,000 this year; and the Los Angeles Brewers Guild, which donated $3,000 this year.

So call your designated driver and sign up for one of the myriad of events happening at Los Angeles Beer Week now. Quality food and beer in one of America’s finest towns … it can’t get much better than that.
