The Kenyan government and military has launched what may appear to be a final assault against the militant attackers who took over Nairobi's Westgate mall on Saturday.

The siege at Nairobi's upscale mall was launched by The Shebab, a militant group that base itself in Somalia. The organization has claimed that they staged the attack in response to the presence of Kenyan troops in Somalia.

"What Kenyans are witnessing at #Westgate is retributive justice for crimes committed by their military," commented The Shebab.

According to the Kenyan military, it has taken back much of the mall, confining terrorists and releasing more hostages. Reports have counted 68 deaths by late Sunday, with potential for even more victims who have yet to be accounted.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta lost his nephew and his nephew's fiancée in the attack.

Marie Harf, spokeswoman for the State Department, commented that five Americans have been injured in the attack; there have been no reports of American deaths in the event.
