Kenyan President Unuru Kenyatta announced on Tuesday that the siege of the upscale Westgate Premier Shopping Mall had ended with the killing of five militants and the capture of 11 others.

Over 60 people have been killed in the attack, according to the Kenyan government.  The death toll is expected to rise as the mall is thoroughly searched in the coming days.

"As a nation, our head is bloodied but unbowed," said Kenyatta, who promised a full investigation and report. "We have ashamed and defeated our attackers."

According to officials, several of the militants were killed after several sections of the mall complex collapsed following a fire set by the attackers.

Earlier reports indicated that American and British nationals were part of the militant group, but Kenya's government has said it could not confirm any of those reports.

Al-Shabab's media office told Reuters that Americans and Britons were not involved.

The Somali-based and al-Qaeda linked terrorist group al-Shabab has taken responsibility for the attack.  The group has been posting updates on Twitter and presenting conflicting messages from what the Kenyan government and local media has reported.
