Islamist Rebels Takes Hostages In Philippines

Syria has been the central focus as of late, leaving eyes averted from the Islamist rebels in the Philippines. 

200 fighters from the Moro National Liberation Front were at a six-day standoff with officials starting on Monday, after capturing 100 people to hold hostage.  On-and-off fire fights broke out over the week, with 22 people deceased, including 15 militants. 

The group’s leader agreed to a truce on Friday, but as of Saturday, the rebels continue to hold their position while continuing their firefights. The vice president of the country plans on flying in later Saturday to help the truce arrangement follow through.
