The U.S. Forest Service said on Thursday that the massive Rim Fire, which has burned over 237,000 acres in the Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park, was started by a hunter that allowed an illegal fire to "escape."

The hunter has been identified, according to the Los Angeles Times, but his name is being withheld pending further investigation.

The Rim Fire started on August 17 and is 80 percent contained.
