Food Stamp Funding Slashed
Amid vehement objections from House Democrats and a veto threat from President Barack Obama, Republicans in the House of Representatives pushed through a bill cutting billions of dollars a year from the national food stamp program, the New York Times reports.
The bill, which narrowly passed 217-210, cuts $4 billion a year for the next ten years from food stamps, a 5 percent reduction in the nation's primary public feeding program according to CBS News.
According to House Republicans, the reduction bill was a critical response to the rapidly increasing number of federal dollars spent on food stamps each year.
"This bill eliminates loopholes, ensures work requirements, and puts us on a fiscally responsible path," Representative Marlin Stutzman (R-Indiana) told the Times.
Even with cuts, the food stamp program could cost as much as $700 billion over the next ten years.
