Egyptian security forces raided Kerdasa—a town knowm for its Islamist stronghold—after exchanging fire with armed militants on Thursday. One Egyptian police general was killed and at least nine officers were wounded during the assault as the police reportedly arrested 55 suspects.

According to the local news sources, the security forces executed the operation with army vehicles as well as helicopters. After multiple rounds of gun fire and the arrest of the suspected Islamist militants, dozens of weapons had been seized.

This is the second raid in the pro-Morsi town of Kerdasa located in the outskirts of Cairo following the overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi on July 3.

On August 14, security forces charged Kersada’s main police station with heavy arms such as the grenades killing hundreds of Morsi supporters.

Since Morsi's departure, series of violent pandemonium swept across Cairo and its surrouding regions. Mass raids and arrests had been taken place leaving at least 1,000 dead and 2,000 under arrest.
