Diana Nyad, 64-year-old American long distance swimmer, has become the first person to swim across the Florida Straits from Cuba without a shark cage.

On Monday, she succeeded on her fifth attempt to cross the estimated 110-mile journey, setting a record for the longest ocean swim without a shark cage.

Immediately upon arrival in Florida, Nyad was placed on a stretcher to be hydrated with an IV before being taken to a hospital.

Nyad began her journey Saturday morning and was accompanied by five support boats which provided her with food and water.

Only one other person has swam across the treacherous Florida Straits. At age 22, Australian Susie Maroney completed the swim in 1997 using a protective cage, which enabled her to make the journey in just 25 hours.
