Ariel Castro Found Dead In Jail Cell

CBS TV affiliate in Cleveland reported that Ariel Castro was found dead in his jail cell Tuesday night. KCAL 9 and also reported that Castro was in a protected cell and was checked on every 30 minutes.

The Blade reported that Castro was "found hanging" at 9:20 p.m. local time in the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio.

Castro pleaded guilty on July 26, 2013 of kidnapping and raping Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesu, and Michelle Knight, in addition to aggravated murder. As part of a deal, he pleaded guilty to a total of 937 counts and in return he received life in prison plus 1,000 years instead of the death penalty.

Business Insider published the following statement made to 19 Action News by JoEllen Smith with the Ohio Department of Corrections:

Inmate Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 pm at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals. Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation.
