Congratulations to Tim and Marie, winners of the first leg of "The Amazing Race" (CBS).
Congratulations to Tim and Marie, winners of the first leg of "The Amazing Race" (CBS).
"The Amazing Race" premiered its 23rd season tonight. Get ready to laugh out loud as some of America's finest travel around the world (hopefully, but probably not) with plenty of respect to the customs and traditions of the people they come across.

An old Western movie ranch is the starting point of this season's "Amazing Race." Phil Keoghan, returning as the show's host, is there to greet them and wish them on their way. The teams head to a row of 2013 Ford C-Max cars and await a phone call that will tell them their first clue of the race. The phone call tells them to head to the airport, and that their first location is Iquiquie, Chile.

Once in Chile, one person in each team has to paraglide across a stretch of land, while the other person has to go and find them when they land at the beach.

Their next clue tells them to go to Muelle Prat. Once there, one team member - the one who paraglided - must operate a rowboat and collect five fish.

Afterwards, they receive a clue that tells them to head to a municipal theater on foot, the first pit stop of the race. The first team who arrives at the pit stop wins an express pass for themselves, as well as an express pass they must give to another team of their choice.

Here's a run-down of season 23's cast, as well as their experiences during the first leg of the race:

Ally Mello & Ashley Covert: These blonde bombshells are friends and LA Kings Ice Crew Girls. At first look, they seem like a weaker team. However, if Caroline and Jen from season 22 taught us anything, it's that stronger male teams are always willing to help out some damsel teammates in distress. This is the case with Leo and Jamal, a team that Ally and Ashley bond with early in the episode. The girls finish in sixth place.

Brandon Squyres & Adam Switzer: These beard lovers are childhood friends from Chico, California. For a couple of outdoorsmen, they are excited for the opportunity to go paragliding. Luckily for Brandon, he lands the opportunity. Unfortunately for Brandon, he doesn't quite realize how to do it and his first effort ends with him sliding down a hill instead of cruising over it. Making up the time is one of the many reasons they fall behind. They squeak by a father-daughter team and snag the tenth spot.

Chester Pitts II & Ephraim Salaam: The duo once played together for the Houston Texans. Knowing their lengthy athletic history, these two seem like they would excel at the physical side of this race. Their efforts aren't too shabby. They make it to the pit stop in fourth place.

Hoskote & Naina Venkatesh: This father-daughter team comes to us from Laguna Niguel, California. He's a doctor, she's a fitness instructor; Together, they have the perfect amount of brains and brawn... Or so it seems. These two read their clue wrong, and the wrong team member goes out to snag the five fish. Seeing as how they were already in last place throughout the race, they arrive at the pit stop in eleventh place and are therefore eliminated. So much for "Father knows best."

Jason Case & Amy Diaz: This cute couple is picture-perfect. Amy is bringing smarts to the team (She finished two Master degrees at 22). Jason is an asset to the physical side when he proves to be quite a rowboater. He's even much better than many of the other teams that are flailing around in the water. They end in eighth place, but are definitely a team to watch for throughout the season.

Leo Temory & Jamal Zadran: These cousins are businessmen. They call themselves "Afghanimals." This team, along with Ally and Ashley, make a rookie mistake: Letting their taxis go upon arriving to a location. In addition to their taxi error, the guys make another one: Not paying attention to the clue. The paraglider is also the one to do the rowboat challenge, but Leo and Jamal switch off. Having to start over puts them further behind in the race. They end in seventh place, but learning their lessons.

Nicky Getz & Kim DeJesus: These women are friends and baseball wives. Their husbands played on the same team, the Kansas City Royals. They seem quite fierce and determined. They will most likely be great contenders later on. They finish fifth in the first leg.

Rowan Joseph & Shane Partlow: These guys are best friends and business partners. They seem like underdogs, but prove their strength and ability in the first leg. They end in third place. Lucky break or strong competitors?

Tim Wiyninger & Danny Merkey: This best-friend duo is from Cordell, Oklahoma. On the way to LAX, Tim and Danny get lost. The poor Oklahoma boys are apparently confused by all the freeways in Los Angeles. These small-town boys better wise up to places that seem foreign to them, or they'll be left behind in the race. They finish in ninth place, unsurprisingly.

Tim Sweeney & Marie Mazzocchi: These two are exes, so they should be fun to watch. Will they make up or fall even more apart? Throughout the first leg, there's plenty of nagging and arguments between the two. Still, it seems to pay off for them. They come in second, but only because another team did not pay attention and broke a rule.

Travis & Nicole Jasper: The Jaspers are a married couple (and ER Physicians) from Atlanta, Georgia. Will this couple make through the strenuous challenges presented by "The Amazing Race"? Well, they have the potential to... If they could follow the rules. What is the number one rule on this show? ALWAYS read the clue. The Jaspers broke the cardinal rule by taking a taxi to the pit stop and disregarding the part of the clue that said "Make your way on foot." They receive a 30-minute penalty. They arrived to the pit stop first, but ultimately come in second due to their penalty.

Long story short, father-daughter team Hoskote and Naina Venkatesh are the first to go. Because of the 30-minute penalty, Travis and Nicole Jasper forfeited what would have been their express passes to Tim Sweeney and Marie Mazzocchi. Marie credits her incessant nagging and insults towards Tim as the reason behind their victory. Maybe these exes will rekindle a little something, after all.
