'50 Shades Of Grey' Casting Is Almost Perfect

Author E.L. James made the announcement via Twitter. On Monday, she tweeted in the morning to get everyone prepared for the announcements, "Good moaning all. Hold on to your hats..." A minute later she tweeted, "I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey." So we knew about Anastasia Steele, but what about Christian? She waited an hour later and tweeted, "So... Christian...," probably making all of the fans' hearts beat way too fast waiting for the announcement. But she revealed the news five minutes later, "The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey." And then all hell broke loose.
Fans are still so angry about the announcement of Christian Grey because they wanted Matt Bomer or Ian Somerhalder to play the lead. Many would like to see Alexis Bledel as Anastasia Steele. So much so that the fans have created a petition to try to get as many signatures as possible to change the casting of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele to Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel. The petition has over 70,000 signatures now.

Okay, now this is where it has to stop. Now, I will admit, I am a huge fan of the trilogy and have read all of the books, so I'm not just an outside spectator here. I know the characters and just like anyone else, I made up my own pictures of the leads in my head. But when it was announced that the trilogy was going to be adapted into three movies, I hadn't pictured any well-known actors playing the characters of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. So, I just decided to wait and see what the decision was. I can honestly say I am 99% happy with the decision made.
First, let's talk about the casting of Anastasia Steele--just for a few brief moments because we all know who the most important casting part is, which is Christian Grey. So, I won't waste too much time on Anastasia. But what I do have to say is that she is perfect for the role. I have never heard of her until now and had to look her up when the announcement was made. She's mostly known for her role in the TV series, "Ben and Kate." But other than that, she was in a few well-known movies such as "21 Jump Street" and "The Social Network," but cast in smaller roles. She resembles how I imagined Anastasia Steele to look, just as long as she dyes her hair darker. Anastasia is known for being shy but also for having a sense of humor, which I think Johnson will be able to play very well. Alexis Bledel is all wrong for the role because she will always be seen as Rory from Gilmore Girls in my eyes and will never be mature enough to play Anastasia Steele.
Now, enough about Anastasia and let's get to what really matters--Christian Grey. I personally wanted the casting to be of people who weren't very well known so we didn't already have preconceived ideas of them. For instance, some fans were complaining it wasn't Ryan Gosling as Christian Grey, but that's just nonsense. He is too well known and mainstream and all wrong for Christian, except for his good looks and swag. In addition, even though Matt Bomer isn't hugely famous except for his role in Magic Mike, he looks too "pretty-boy" to be Christian Grey. So, Charlie Hunnam is perfect for this role.
He is not too mainstream, because he's mainly just known for his role in the TV series, "Sons of Anarchy." He is good looking and built just as Christian Grey is described in the novels. The one complaint that I do have about him is that he has light-colored long hair and is a little too rugged. But that's something make up, hair dye and a hair cut can fix, so I'm not worried about that. He seems like he would play a mysterious, business-savvy man with a dark side very well. As we've seen already in "Sons of Anarchy," he plays somewhat of a dark character and from what I've seen, E.L. James couldn't have picked a better actor for this role.
Personally, I'm very excited for the movie to come out. I think Dakota Johnson will be the perfect portrayal of the shy, stubborn and insecure personality of Anastasia Steele. As for Charlie Dunnam, he is going to have to go through a lot of backlash from the fans, but it will be worth it to see him as the young and handsome Christian Grey with a dark side.
