A growing wildfire on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park has destroyed two residences and five outbuildings, putting some 2,500 houses, hotels and camp buildings under threat.

The main highway into the park has been shutdown, although the park remains open.

The wildfire broke out on Saturday about 3 pm in Steinislaus National Forest area close to Yosemite. As of Wednesday morning, the fire was 5 percent contained and had spread to more than 16,000 acres. Around 900 personnel were fighting the blaze, including National Air Guardsmen.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
