UC San Diego Student Held By DEA Receives $4.1 Million For Maltreatment

A UC San Diego student left in an interrogation room for five days by the Drug Enforcement Administration without food or water will receive $4.1 million to settle his maltreatment claim.

The settlement for Daniel Chong, 25, was approved by the Department of Justice on Tuesday.  According to the LA Times Chong and eight others were taken into custody for interrogation after officers raided a home on April 20, 2012.

Chong was swept up in the raid after going with friends to celebrate the 4/20 holiday by smoking marijuana. The house which is reported to have been on surveillance for several days which led to Chong being taken into custody.

Chong spend five days in the interrogation room reportedly suffering from hallucinations, dehydration and malnutrition which lead to him being to weak to continue his screams for help.

Chong is expected to return to UC San Diego and complete his graduate degree.
