Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said that he will renounce his Canadian citizenship after a newspaper pointed out that he may be a dual citizen, reports The Daily Beast.

Some legal experts say that he is a Canadian citizen, since he was born in Canada. His mother was a U.S. citizen.

A Cruz spokesman denied the claim that he is a Canadian citizen, but Cruz is looking to clear up any doubt since he may run for president in 2016.

“Now the Dallas Morning News says that I may technically have dual citizenship,” Cruz said to ABC. “Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship. Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator, I believe I should be only an American.”

Most legal scholars agree that Cruz is American and should not have a problem running for president. Some though, including birther advocate Donald Trump, believe Cruz may have a problem.

Former Obama campaign manager David Ploufee made fun of Cruz on Twitter. Birther rumors caused Obama some issues in the past.
