The trial of former Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius, who is charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, will begin in March 2014 according to Pistorius' attorney. Attorney Kenny Oldwage told CNN that while the trial will begin in March, the entire trial could take place over months due to possible motions in the case.

Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder from an incident in February 2013. Pistorius, a double amputee track athlete, killed Steenkamp this past Valentine's Day after he said he mistakenly thought she was a home invader.

A person convicted of premeditated murder faces a sentence of life with a minimum of 25 years in prison.

Pistorius will re-appear in a court in South Africa on Monday to face the charges. The court will also announce the exact date that the trial will start.

The case is expected to be sent to the High Court, located in the capital of Pretoria. Since South Africa does not have a trial by jury, the judge will be the only person determining the fate of the former Olympian.
