The President addressed the nation Saturday afternoon from the White House Rose Garden, stating that he believes the U.S. should "hold Assad accountable" and intervene in Syria.

Obama did say that although he believes he has the authority to carry out military action in Syria without Congressional approval, he will ask Congress to make the formal declaration to use force against the Syrian government.

"What message will we send if a dictator can gas hundreds of children to death in plain sight and pay no price?" Asked the President. "Make no mistake this has implications beyond chemical warfare."

While the U.N. Security Council has not yet announced their findings after an investigative team spent about four days in Syria collecting evidence to confirm if the government did indeed kill thousands of its own people with chemical weapons, Obama said he is comfortable going forward without U.N. approval.

"The U.N. has been completely paralyzed in this situation and has been unable to hold Assad accountable," said Obama.

However the U.S. has also received staunch criticism for waiting so long to take action against Assad, though the many Americans believe that is the right response.

Planned protests against U.S. involvement in Syria are taking place all over the country as thousands of Americans demand that their country stay out of Syrian affairs to avoid another Iraq catastrophe.

Obama did promise that no American "boots will be on the ground" in Syria, indicating that air strikes will be the primary military action.

Congress wrote a letter the the President a few days ago demanding to be part of the decision making process, and if they decide that America should not be involved, the country will have to hold its breath and see if their President will listen.
