Obama Cancels Joint Military Exercises With Egypt
In a press conference on Thursday, President Barack Obama said that the United States "strongly condemns" ongoing violence in Egypt and that he is canceling the joint U.S.-Egyptian military exercises scheduled for next month.
"The United States strongly comdemns the steps that have been taken by Egypt's interim government and security forces," Obama said on Thursday at his vacation home in Massachusetts. "Our traditional cooperation cannot continue as usual when civilians are being killed in the streets and rights are being rolled back."
"This morning, we notified the Egyptian government that we are canceling our bi-annual joint military exercise which was scheduled for next month."
Despite the cancellation of the "Bright Star" joint military exercises, Obama and his administration did not discuss any other changes to their policy towards Egypt, including cutting off financial and military aid to Egypt.
