North Carolina Republican Gov. Patrick McCroy signed a bill forcing strict voter requirements Monday night, after which civil rights group immediately sued the state.

The bill would require voters to show identification, rolls back early voting and ends one-stop registration during early voting, according to The Daily Beast.

North Carolina is one of 12 states to adopt voter registration since the 2010 election to protect against fraud, even though there is little evidence of fraud being a widespread problem in the state. Twelve of the states to adopt these laws are controlled by Republicans.

Civil rights groups and the lawsuit claim the legislation will make it hard for minorities and the elderly to vote.

McCroy told CBS the bill was "a common sense law" that 70 percent of North Carolinians support. He also noted that 34 states require some form of ID to vote and 20 (including North Carolina) require a photo ID.
