Music Festival Calendar Beyond The West Coast: August 2013

It seems that everybody and their grandma—to be fair, they’re pretty chill grandmas—is headed to at least one major music festival a year.
They’ll post and tweet and Instagram about their festival experience before, during, and after the actual event, and everyone around them will roll their eyes… until it’s their turn to cavort around whatever festival fairground they’re headed off to.
If you’re leaving Los Angeles for another part of America this summer, don’t worry, there are other festivals out there besides Coachella! Seriously. Below are some options to check out this MONTH; check back later for the August calendar.
Lollapalooza – August 2-4, Grant Park, Chicago
Headliners: The Cure, Mumford & Sons, The Killers, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix, The Postal Service, Vampire Weekend, etc. etc. etc.
What’s so special: Sure, sure, they have festivals in Brazil and Chile now too (oooh, fancy), but this Chicago tentpole is one of the OG music festivals (if not the OG music festival), and with one of the craziest lineups of the summer (which is actually saying a lot), if you’re in town, you better try to make your way to Lolla.
Electric Zoo – August 30-September 1, Randall’s Island Park, NYC

Headliners: Avicii, Above & Beyond, Knife Party, Benny Benassi
What’s so special: Where would you rather be on Labor Day – at the beach, fighting hundreds of families trying to hold onto the last remnants of summer, or on an island jamming out to some of the world’s top EDM talent? You know where you’d RATHER be.
Made in America – August 31-September 1, Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia
Headliners: Beyonce, deadmau5, Phoenix, Nine Inch Nails, Calvin Harris, Queens of the Stone Age
What’s so special: If you’re not getting in touch with your inner animal at Electric Zoo and you’re still in the tri-state area, Jay-Z and Budweiser’s Made in America is showcasing some top talent too. Y’know, if you’re into artists like Kendrick Lamar and Phoenix and oh yeah BEYONCE.
For those of you looking to travel this semester…
TomorrowWorld – September 27-29, Fairburn, GA
Headliners: No real headlining system, but Tiesto, Gareth Emery, and Armin Van Buuren are all playing, so
What’s so special: TomorrowLand, Belgium’s biggest EDM festival, is making the leap across the pond in the form of TomorrowWorld, and it’s touching down not too far from Atlanta. A scroll through the lineup is like a who’s who of modern EDM royalty. They’re gunning for ya, Ultra.
Austin City Limits – October 4-6, October 11-13, Zilker Park, Austin
Headliners: Depeche Mode, The Cure, Muse, Kings of Leon
What’s so special: Like several other big festivals, ACL’s expanding to two weekends, meaning two weekends of some of the coolest acts—seriously, if you haven’t seen Muse live, you’re missing out on one of the best live performances ever—in one of America’s chillest cities. Think of this like SXSW, except with way less tech and overbearing pretension.
