Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who is on trial for murder-related charges in the deaths of hundreds of protesters in 2011, could walk free within days after a judge set aside a corruption case against him.

A lawyer for Mubarak, 85, said on Monday that an Egyptian court has ordered the release of the deposed president, but there has been no official confirmation from the recently military-backed government.

The former dictator, who was overthrown by a popular revolution in 2011, still faces charges in connection with the killing of hundreds of protesters in that Arab Spring revolt.

The possibility of Mubarak's release comes amid deep civil unrest and bloodshed related to a crackdown by the country's military-led government on supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, who was voted into power after Mubarak was removed. More than 800 civilians and police have died in clashes since Wednesday.

On Monday, unidentified gunmen opened fire on police cadets near the border post of Rafah, killing 25, according to Egyptian police and Interior Ministry officials.
