On Thursday, a UK high court issued an injunction blocking the government from using material seized from David Miranda in a criminal investigation. The decision comes just half an hour after a police lawyer announced that such an investigation was launched.

The data seized from the partner of Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald exposed mass digital surveillance by US and UK spy agencies.

The decision by Lord Justice Beaston and Judge Kenneth Parker will curtail the police from using the data seized at Heathrow airport on Sunday in a criminal investigation.

Guardian News & Media fully supports Miranda's legal action, saying that it had "grave concerns that the judgment allows police to examine without any legal oversight journalistic material seized from David Miranda. It remains our position that David Miranda was involved in legitimate journalistic activity."
