Opening act Breakfast, a Los Feliz-based band, was the highlight Monday night at the Bardot in Hollywood with its exceptional musical ability and an incredibly tangible stage presence and energy.

Much to the crowd’s surprise, lead vocalist Andrea Adolph brought the room to a silence at the start of the single, "Grizzly Adams."

Adolph, along with fellow members Luciano Russo, Sean Dwyer and Max Bussell, swapped roles between vocals and piano. The up-and-coming band also incorporated more unique instruments such as the xylophone and accordion.

Russo, one of the band's founding members, said the key to increasing exposure and bringing new listeners is to play live. Russo was confident in Breakfast, which saw its songs featured on Sirius XMU and most recently on 98.7 FM.

The band claimed musical influences ranging from Flying Lotus to The Cure. It was clear the members didn’t confine themselves to a specific genre, an intentional move, said Russo.

"Other people want to stay safe, and we’ve learned that never works,” Russo said. “If we want to make a hip-hop song, we’ll make a hip-hop song.”

Their album, "Sun/Moon," debuted on Sept. 27, 2012 as a soft release with intimate performances held at their house. The band went on to perform at more than 10 venues and events such as the Echo, Sayers Club and South by Southwest in Austin, Tex.

"Sun/Moon" can be downloaded and streamed free. Critics said listeners should “grab fast before they realize they have an album people would be more than happy to pay for.”

Each song on the album takes listeners through a story of heartbreak and new love. Adolph belts out powerful vocals in “Scarred.” When Breakfast culminated with "The Park," the crowd danced and chanted for an encore.

Russo said he was happily overwhelmed from Breakfast’s online fan base. The band boasted more than 50,000 plays on SoundCloud.

When asked if fans could expect more new music, Adolph said, "Yes, definitely, but remember this album took us two years." As the band's fanbase continues to grow, the wait will be worth it.

The Bardot hosts “It’s a School Night” on top of the Avalon nightclub every Monday evening, an event that gives new and established artists the chance to perform live music.

Breakfast performs this weekend at the X Games hosted by Red Bull. The band will also be at El Cid in Silver Lake on August 8.
