Ariel Castro, the Cleveland man who kidnapped and sexually abused and tortured three women for over a decade, was sentenced to life in prison on Thursday in a plea deal with prosecutors.

Cuyahoga County Judge Michael Russo said the crimes were "so extreme" that Castro should never leave prison.  Russo added 1,000 years to Castro's sentence without the possibility of parole, essentially ensuring that he would die in prison. In a deal, Castro agreed to plead guilty to 937 charges, including rape, kidnapping, and aggravated murder for forcing one of his victims to miscarry during a pregnancy.

Castro spoke at his sentencing hearing, insisting that he was "not a monster." He said that "all the sex was consensual" between him and his victims.

Castro insisted that he wasn't evil or violent, but that he had been a victim of sexual abuse as a child and was addicted to pornography. He denied kidnapping or raping his victims.

"If you asked my daughter she would say, my dad is the best dad in the world," Castro said, referring to the now 6-year-old girl that he fathered with one of his victims.

While Castro apologized to the victims several times, he also said that the FBI "let these girls down" by doing a poor job investigating their disappearances despite interviewing one of his daughters.

One of Castro's victims, Michelle Knight, reading from a written statement, said that while she might eventually forgive, she will always remember what Castro did to her and two other women.

"You took 11 years of my life away," Knight said in her statement. "I spent 11 years of hell. Now your hell is just beginning."
