After days of specluation, ousted ex-president Hosni Mubarak was released from prison and flown by helicopter to a military hospital in southern Cairo on Thursday.

Egyptian State TV showed Mubarak being taken from the prison to a waiting helicopter and being flown from the prison grounds.

A court ruling on Wednesday stated that Mubarak, 85, could be released from the Tora prison pending his trial where he is accused of corruption and other charges stemming from Egypt's 2011 protests. Mubarak is expected to be placed under house arrest, according to the office of Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi.

Prosecutors did not appeal Wednesday's court ruling.
