Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin announcing that he wanted U.S. whistleblower Edward Snowden to leave, Snowden applied for temporary asylum in Russia, reports CNN.

Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor, has been in Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport for about three weeks. Snowden has been offered asylum in three Latin American countries, but the U.S. is preventing him from leaving, according to The Daily Beast.

Snowden is charged with espionage after leaking documents that exposed U.S. surveillance programs. Since leaking the information, Snowden went to Hong Kong, then to Russia. He has been unable to leave Russia since U.S. authorities revoked his passport.
