Charming Montana Avenue in Santa Monica hosted Monday its fourth annual art walk. The street, commonly occupied by young families and couples and known to be silent past 7 p.m., gave folks a reason to come out and see a livelier artistic side.

“We really just do it to get people out in our community,” said Karin Dunne, owner of Aveda Salon on Montana Avenue who also serves on the Montana Avenue Merchant Association. The organization was responsible for putting on the event.

“And to think it only took a few of us to make this happen and draw this large crowd. It keeps growing every year,” Dunne added.

Hundreds showed up to walk the blocks between Sixth Street and 17th street, home to more than 75 retail stores. The event showcased Santa Monica-based artists and offered small bites of food, wine and even art contests for children.

According to Dunne, business on Montana Avenue was still recovering from the economic difficulties, so a small group of storeowners — seven to be exact — decided to highlight what the street offered best: art.

“It's a way to give back to our community,” said Jean McCoy, owner of To Wag For and chair of the Association.

Each of the retail stores participating in the art walk partnered with a local artist of its choice. Together, they collaborated to help small businesses grow and promote independent artists.

“Plus, any time you can bring people to the street and have a positive experience is always a good thing," McCoy said. "It gives people a reason to come back and shop."

The young and elderly canvassed the beautiful tree-lined street with wines in hand, snacking and fawning over various forms of art such as wire sculptures and "up-cycled" crate paintings.

The event concluded with a stunning sunset hue with jazz, acoustic guitar and drumming that echoed out throughout the street.

“We just want to make our street a fun place,” said McCoy.

The Montana Street Merchant Association will be hosting several new events this upcoming Fall including a trunk show.
