HBO continued its television awards dominance as the 65th Primetime Emmy Award nominations were announced early Thursday morning.

The cable network hauled in 108 nominations, more than CBS and NBC combined, who brought in 53 nominations apiece. HBO also pulled in 27 more nominations than last year.  "Game of Thrones" and "Behind the Candelabra" brought in 16 and 15 nominations, respectively.

The FX series "American Horror Story: Asylum" received the most nominations with 17, including Best Miniseries and Best Actress for Jessica Lange.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in the nominations was from online media streaming service Netflix, which received 14 nominations.  Netflix's original series "House of Cards" received nine nominations, while the highly-anticipated fourth season of "Arrested Development" received three nominations, including Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jason Bateman.

While Netflix's 14 nominations pale in comparison to HBO's 108 or even Showtime's 31, some in the industry point to the new player and the importance of creating original content.

"Everybody is stepping up their game," said Bruce Rosenblum, chairman and chief executive of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the organization that produces the Emmys. "It's not that dissimilar to a couple of decades ago when HBO and Showtime started producing original content."

NBC's "30 Rock" received 13 nominations for its final season, the most of any comedy series.

The complete list of nominations for the 2013 Emmy Awards can be seen here.

The 2013 Emmy Awards will take place on September 22 at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles and will be broadcast on CBS.
