Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, was flown to a hospital in Boston on Sunday for emergency treatment after she grew sick while on vacation in Nantucket.

Heinz Kerry, 74, grew extremely ill while staying at the family's vacation home and by Sunday evening and arrived at the Nantucket Cottage Hospital in critical condition Sunday afternoon.

Though doctors were able to stabilize her, Heinz Kerry's condition had grown too serious for the small medical facility on Nantucket, according to the New York Times.

John Kerry accompanied her to Boston after returning from his Mid East and Southeast Asia tours on July 3.

“The family is grateful for the outpouring of support it has received and aware of the interest in her condition, but they ask for privacy at this time,” said Glen Johnson, a spokesman for Mr. Kerry.
