Fiery Tanker Crash On 5 Freeway Spills Fuel Into LA River
Traffic near Elysian Park was snarled on Saturday after a tanker truck loaded with 7,500 gallons of fuel flipped over and caught fire in tunnel at the 2 and 5 freeway interchange.
The fiery crash was reported around 10:30am. The Los Angeles Fire Department said that no one was injured in the crash and that the truck driver was able to make it to safety. The truck fire ignited brush near the freeway and the much of the tanker's load of gasoline flowed into storm drains and the nearby Los Angeles River.
Residents in nearby Silver Lake reported hearing "popping" noises, which the LAPD said were manhole covers blown out from the heat and pressure. No evacuations have been reported, but officials are encouraging people to avoid the area and stay indoors.
The LAFD said it was working with local, regional, state, and federal environmental authorities to minimize the spill's impact on the river, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Los Angeles River had recently opened to public recreation and kayaking after several years of revitalization efforts.
The 5 freeway is still closed northbound at the 2 freeway interchange. The CHP is encouraging motorists to use the 101 and 134 freeways as alternate routes.
Traffic is expected to remain snarled in the area throughout the day due to a late-afternoon game at nearby Dodger Stadium between the Dodgers and Colorado Rockies.
