Approximately half of the marriages in the United States end up in divorce, according to the American Psychological Association. This statistic now includes the parents of Miley Cyrus - Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus. Tish Cyrus officially filed for divorce this past week after 19 years of marriage.

Billy Ray Cyrus originally filed for divorce in 2010, but the two decided to work things out and got back together a few months later. When this happened, Tish posted on her Facebook, "Big thanks to all of our family, friends, and fans who have kept us in their thoughts and prayers. Our family weathered a huge storm and I feel we are stronger than we have ever been."

Even though it looked like they had been working on their marriage,  they have decided to call it quits for real this time. When I first became aware of this news, it actually surprised me because of how long their marriage lasted. I thought to myself, "Wow, that's a really long marriage;" however, in reality, it's not long at all. So many couples now, not only in Hollywood, give up on this sacred institution before they even give it a chance. (Case in point: the latest and most talked-about divorce in Hollywood is Kim Kardashian's 72-day marriage. It's almost a disgrace that a marriage, especially one so highly publicized, lasted only 72 days when they called it quits). We are all being brainwashed that a marriage is long if it lasts over 5 years, but the definition of a long marriage should be over 50 years. Those are the marriages we should all be taking notes from.

When the going gets tough, the couples call it quits. But on a side note, why is it that United States' divorce rate is up to 50%? I understand some people are just genuinely not happy in their relationship so they want to get a divorce. Everyone has their right to be happy and their right to divorce, but all I'm saying is that couples need to give their relationship a longer chance before assuming it will fail. Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus gave their marriage a chance before making the tough decision to separate, and I applaud them for realizing that and doing something about it. They gave their marriage 19 years before deciding it wasn't going to work out.

My parents have been married for over 25 years and my grandparents for over 55 years. The one thing my dad has told me and my siblings is that when we get in a relationship, it's not going to be easy; we will have to work on it, but it'll worth it because of what you get out of it. The bottom line is that too many people are taking their relationships too lightly and getting married at too young of an age just because they can. If people didn't take marriage as a casual right of passage, the divorce rate wouldn't be as high as it is now. Couples also need to give their marriage a fair chance before they just give up on it.

The Cyrus family has asked for their privacy during this time. "This is a personal matter and we are working to find a resolution that is in the best interest of our family. We ask that you respect our privacy at this time," Tish Cyrus told People Magazine in a statement.

Their daughter, Noah Cyrus, has reached out to her fans on social media for their support. She posted on her Facebook page, "Thank you guys for praying for me. It means a lot. I am going through a tough time. So please keep praying. I love you guys so much. XOXO." On her Twitter account, she tweeted, "Please pray for me and my family" when the news first went public. The next day she tweeted, "Thank you everyone off of Twitter and Instagram for your prayers. It means a lot to my family and me." It's good to see she has support on social media to help her get through this rough time in her life. She also has sister Miley Cyrus by her side too, which seems helpful for her.

My thoughts and prayers really do go out to the Cyrus family during this difficult time in their lives. I hope the divorce process goes as smoothly as it can without having any difficulties along the way.
