One and a half months after the September 11, 2001 attacks, Congress passed "The USA Patriot Act: Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required To Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism."

The Act expanded  the legal limits of the US government's ability to gather information about its citizens' (and non-citizens') activities, in the name of national security.
