Six people, including the gunman, were reported killed in a series of random shootings near Santa Monica College, the Santa Monica Police Department said at a press conference Friday afternoon.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabooks began the press conference stating that it was not a college or a school shooting.

The first 911 call was reported at 11:52 AM on Yorkshire Avenue. The events of today were a series of random shootings with an automatic rifle. The shootings took place at 20th and Pico Blvd., Cloverfield and Pico Blvd., and 20th and Pearl Street. The suspect shot at police and a passenger vehicle.

The police engaged the shooter with an exchange of gunfire. The suspect headed towards the library on campus and shot at a woman. The shooter then entered the library. Seabooks said police entered the library and “Directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene. The information we have indicates at this point that as many as half a dozen people were shot at and killed.”

Cheif Seabrooks went on to say, "at this hour it appears at least a half dozen are dead and two are three are injured."

Six people were brought to two different hospitals.
