President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil has called an emergency meeting Friday morning with her top of top Cabinet officials. According to USA Today, “Rousseff, who has a standoffish governing style, has been almost entirely absent from the public eye, making only one statement earlier in the week that peaceful protests are part of the democratic process.”

Gilberto Carvalho, the Secretary General of the Presidency, stated, "We can't anticipate the future. We don't know what it's going to be like. Perhaps things will not be so intense (as the recent protests) but we have to be prepared for anything."

Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota was “very angry” as his ministry building was attacked yesterday. Broken windows and smoke rose from the building.  Patriota commented on the situation by saying, "I believe that the great majority of the protesters are not taking part in this violence and are instead looking to improve Brazil's democracy via legitimate forms of protest." He also asked for the protesters "to convey their demands peacefully."

These protests come at a very interesting time for Brazil as they are preparing for the 2014 World Cup as well as the official visit of Pope Francis this summer.
