Putin Announced His Divorce And Shocks The Russian People

Russian President Vladimir Putin shocked the Russian public Thursday when he announced his divorce from his wife of 30 years, Luydmila Alexandrovna.

Both Putin and Alexandrovna said the split was amicable. 

Putin said in an interview that the divorce was due to his grueling work schedule. 

“There are people who just cannot put up with it,” Putin said. “Lyudmila Alexandrovna has stood watch for eight, almost nine years.” 

Putin will be the first Russian leader to get a divorce since Peter the Great, who in 1698 forced his wife take vows as a nun. 

Divorce in the Russian Orthodox Church, which Putin is a devote member of, is highly frowned upon, if not forbidden.
