Ronald Wagenhoffer, the veteran inspector who surveyed the four-story Philadelphia building that collapsed on June 5 and killed six people last week died Wednesday. Wagenhoffer, 52, passed away Wednesday from what authorities have stated as a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the chest.

The inspector who not only surveyed the building site but approved construction on it was the last city official to check on the building before construction began. During his May 14th inspection, according to ABC, he found no violations and provided the authorization needed to begin construction.

Although the investigation into the building collapse is still ongoing, Wagenhoffer's go ahead to continue the construction may have been a crucial part in the collapse and unfortunate deaths of people trapped by the building collapse.  In a press conference on Thursday, Everett Gillison, the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety & Chief of Staff said, " We are in deep mourning today, we have now lost seven people to this tragedy."

Wagenhoffer died in his truck Wednesday night after serving 16 years as a city worker.
