Oklahoma Tornado Kills 9, Injures Over 100
Friday's storm was the second fatal storm to strike the Oklahoma area over the past 11 days. The storm left commuters stuck on the Interstate 40 highway during rush hour. Causing many of them to either abandon their vehicles or remain until the strom blew over. Law enforcement and the Red Cross arrived in Oklahoma early Saturday to begin assessing the damage from Friday's late evening storm.
The thunderstorms produced between 4 to 7 inches of rain since midnight Saturday and according to The Oklahoma Corporation Commission more than 91,800 power outages are storm related. Although the storm was powerful metorlogist at The National Weather Service are glad it wasn't as strong as the May 20th storm which killed 24 people and injured numerous others. Rick Smith, from the National Weather Service at Norman, told CBS news;
This storm had everything you could handle at one time: tornadoes, hail, lightning, heavy rain, people clogging the highways," Smith said. "It's not even close to anything like what we had last week," he continued. "We were very concerned this would move into downtown. It would have been a major problem. It made all the difference that it was out in the country."
Although the storm Friday didn't take as many lives as the May 20th storm there are rescue efforts under way for residents of Oklahoma.
