Neon Tommy Cleans Up At SoCal Journalism Awards

Neon Tommy took home quite a few honors at the 55th annual Southern California Journalism Awards ceremony Sunday night, including three first place awards and a handful of second and third place certificates.

Of the 13 nominations, Neon Tommy earned ten honors. Former Managing Editor Paige Brettingen tied to win in the Feature category with her piece, "iPals: Connecting Students Half a World Away," and Former Deputy Editor Sarah Parvini came in third with her feature on Southern California's Iranian community.

Neon Tommy was competing with media outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, Hollywood Reporter, KPCC, LA Weekly, Fox Sports, Los Angeles Business Journal and a slew of other Southern California media outlets.

Sports reporter Jonathan Kendrick won in the Online Sports News/Feature/Commentary category with his article, "How High School Eligibility Rules Spiked Todd Hunt's Football Dreams."

Two of Neon Tommy's other sports writers, Aaron Fischman and Andrew Seah, took second and third place in the category.

Neon Tommy's former editor-in-chief, Catherine Green, received third place for the Southern California Press Club's online journalist of the year, beating out journalists from Truthdig and LA Weekly.

Annenberg TV News won first place for best student media news website, with judges saying the "beautifully organized and informative website surpassed many professional operations."

ATVN reporters also received second place for student media photography and Neon Tommy and ATVN's Vicki Chen took third place for best use of social media by an individual for her coverage on Eric Garcetti.

Parvini's, "The Family Arcade Holds on as the Arcade Industry Falters," won for best entertainment feature, while reporter Tasbeeh Herwees', "The Last Bookshops of Los Angeles," took third.

For investigative reporting, Neon Tommy's team of Paige Brettingen, Dan Watson, Danny Lee, Gracie Zheng & Aaron Liu were awarded second place for their series, “LA’s Money, Matters, and Votes," and Matt Pressberg, former editor-at-large," also took second place for his database-driven piece, "Doing the Math on Guns."
