A Los Angeles Unified School District teacher who reportedly stabbed his estranged wife to death Saturday in West Hills where she had taken refuge was arrested shortly after midnight in the San Bernardino area, police said Monday morning.

Michael Rodney Kane, 46, was arrested at 12:05 a.m. at a motel in Joshua Tree, officials with the Los Angeles and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s departments said.

He is currently being questioned and is in the process of being fingerprinted and arrested, LAPD Officer Susan Torres told the LA Daily News.

Kane's wife, Michelle Anne, was killed the day after she visited the Los Angeles Police Department's Topanga station and reported that her husband had violated a restraining order.

From the Daily News:

Topanga Area Patrol officers responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon at about 7:55 a.m. Saturday. The suspect allegedly confronted his wife of about 10 years at her friends' home in the 7100 block of Deveron Ridge Road, Jones said.

"The suspect showed up at the residence, where the victim was staying with friends, and forced his way past the male of the residence, who was injured (by the suspect), confronted the wife inside and ... she fled outside," Jones said. "In a subsequent altercation, he caught up to her and completed the homicide."

Kane has been a teacher at Nestle Avenue Charter Elementary school in Tarzana since 2008. He is the father of two children, a 2-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl, who are staying with relatives.
