Early Friday morning a ferry capsized in between the central islands of the Philippines. The ferry called the MV Lady of Mt. Carmel, capsized off the coast of Burias Island in the providence of Masbate.

Additionally, local fisherman, the Philippine Coast Guard and Navy have all assisted in rescue efforts. 55 of the people aboard the ship were rescued and two people have died. The Office of Civil Defense has stated that it is verifying reports that there at least five passengers on board who were not on the manifest.

According to CNN, “Stormy weather, poor maintenance and lax safety standards make maritime accidents a regular occurrence in the Philippines, which is made up of more than 7,000 islands.

The captain of the ferry, who survived, stated that the weather had been fine, but he noticed a slight balance issue shortly before the accident occurred. However, the cause of the sinking is still unknown.
