Producer Jason Blum's Blumhouse and Universal Pictures are teaming up to develop a sequel to the recently released thriller, "The Purge." According to TheWrap, the film, released in theaters on June 7th, had a $3 million budget and racked up $36 million its opening weekend.

Though it did well at the box office, its viewers were generally less than pleased when the credits rolled. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 38% approval rating by critics and a 43% approval rating by the general audience.

Nonetheless, Blum has already taken action for a sequel and applied for a California's Film and Television Tax Program on "The Purge 2." Filming would have to begin sometime this year.

It is uncertain whether writer/director James DeMonaco will return for the sequel.

"The Purge," starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey, tells the story of a family fighting for survival on the one night of the year that society legalizes crime. Peep its trailer below.
