Amidst the war, the humanitarian crisis continues to grow in Syria, with the number of internally displaced refugees rising to 4.5 and another 1.5 million living in neighboring countries of Turkey Jordan, and Lebanon. The condition of these refugees has been deteriorating with the absence of basic resources such as food and shelter as well as lack of counseling and education for children.

In its recent report, Amnesty International accused the international community of failing in Syria. The international community has been slow to respond to the refugee crisis as well as ongoing violence in the country. Meanwhile, according to Al Jazeera, a former scientist for the Syrian chemical weapons program has said that Assad has enough of the “nerve agent sarin to eradicate the whole of Damascus, Homs, Hama, and Aleppo.”

In the absence of a meaningful action by the international community, the humanitarian crisis in Syria cannot be halted. Not many dispute that Syria is a complex case with many interests at stake. However, the lack of international motivation to reduce the suffering of the refugees as well as the continuation of human rights abuses has resulted in what many see as one of the worst humanitarian disasters of this generation.
