Syria Conflict: Missile Confusion
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stated, “A Russian contract to supply the S-300 surface-to-air missiles was being implemented.” The S-300 defense system targets aircraft and has the capability to engage ballistic missiles.
US Secretary of State John Kerry stated that Russia giving Syria weapons would have a "profoundly negative impact." In addition to Secretary Kerry, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, said “Russian plans to send a sophisticated air defense system to Assad also put Israel's security at risk.”
Russia has said that they will be supply the S-300s because of an already existing contract. Additionally, Russian officials said they would attempt to convince Assad and his regime to take part in the Geneva peace talks. However, Syrian opposition has already stated they will not attend the talks while violence ensues.
