President Obama Announced New Chief Of I.R.S.
Werfel is set to replace Steven Miller, the interim director of the I.R.S., who is at the center of the recent controversy over the agency’s practice of targeting Tea Party-affiliated organizations.
The White House also announced that Werfel will begin his new position on May 22.
“Danny has proven an effective leader who serves with professionalism, integrity and skill,” The New York Times reported that President Obama said in the statement. “The American people deserve to have the utmost confidence and trust in their government, and as we work to get to the bottom of what happened and restore confidence in the I.R.S., Danny has the experience and management ability necessary to lead the agency at this important time.”
Following Miller’s resignation, another top official in the I.R.S. also announced his departure Thursday. In an internal memo sent to agency employees Joseph Grant, the commissioner of the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division, said that he will officially be retiring on June 3.
