Marina And The Diamonds Shined At The Shrine
Marina and the Diamonds performed on Saturday at the Shrine Auditorium, just across the street from USC’s main campus. Originally from Wales, Marina started touring in 2008 opening for artists like Katy Perry and Coldplay.
Her pop style on her latest album, "Electra Heart," was modeled after "the Great American Dream." The album samples several distinct female archetypes in American pop culture, including the Homewrecker, the Teen Idol, the “Su-barbie-a” Housewife, and the Primadonna Girl.
This Americana focus has landed her fans as she brings the music for the already prominent Americana fashion trends.
She’s continuously risen through the ranks of pop since her first album debuted five years ago. In fact, this show was her largest tour audience to date, with crowds filling up the Auditorium almost to capacity.
The audience was a diverse crowd, ranging from thirteen-year-old first-timers with parents in tow to middle aged men; even a few Los Angeles drag queens emerged.
Lines began 12 hours before the show; that crowd, plus the large floor, made it a fight for the front as everyone battled to reach the barriers.
Devoted fans crowded together as the temperatures reached 80 to 90 degrees with no air conditioning. After hours of waiting in the heat, the show finally began but not before a few girls were plucked out from the pit due to dehydration.
Charlie XCX opened the show with her spunky dark wave pop. She instantly riled up the crowd as they thrashed around to her songs off her new album "True Romance," which dropped less than a month ago.
Her latest single, entitled "You (Ha Ha Ha)," which samples Gold Panda, has gone viral with 800,000+ views on Youtube. If that doesn’t ring a bell, you also may know her from her feature on "I Love It" by Icona Pop, which charted No. 7 in the US.
Her young, carefree attitude resonated through the crowd as the entire hall danced endlessly through the set. She is definitely a rising star to look out for, especially for that summer playlist of your currently working on.
After Charli XCX finished her set, the crowd was pumped up for Marina. As the hall fell dark, the Electra Heart sign lit the room and the audience roared.
Marina flowed onto the stage with her wedding dress and veil on, singing “Homewrecker.” Her movements to each song was effortless, giving the impression that she was not doing choreographed dancing but just ad-libbing to the song when appropriate.
She continued through the set, balancing between both her first album for her older fans and second album for her newer ones, with songs including “Oh No!,” “Lies,” and “Starring Role.”
One of the best treats of the night was when she ditched the pop band and sang while playing the piano alone with the audience. Her song “Obsession” details the traumas of OCD and love; her performance felt raw and genuine as she proved she did not need a pop backing to sing live.
With the band back on stage, she finished the set with her recent singles like “Radioactive,” “Primadonna,” and “Hollywood,” ending on the song “Fear and Loathing.”
The lyrics of “Fear and Loathing” describes the pain of feeling like you have multiple personalities and no singular identity. It was fitting as she dazzled the audience with several costumes changes in different “archetypes” and personalities, she ended by resolving the frustration of taking on different personas.
She came back on stage for the encore, singing "Teen Idle" along with the piano and then "How to be a Heartbreaker," which was recently featured on an episode of "Glee."
With the night over, the crowd walked out ecstatic from the two indie diva performances they just witnessed. Charli XCX makes a wonderful opener for Marina; they’ll be touring around the US for the next few months.
