Everton manager David Moyes has been hired to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as the manager at Manchester United after the end of the 2012-13 English Premier League (EPL) season on July 1.

Moyes signed a six-year contract on Thursday to replace Ferguson, who established himself as a legend at United over his 26-year career as the manager of the club before announcing his retirement at the season's end on Wednesday. In that span, Ferguson became the most successful manager in British soccer history by bringing 13 EPL titles, two UEFA Champions League crowns, five FA Cups and four League Cups to Old Trafford. He is now set to become a member of United's board of directors.

A flurry of speculation over who would replace Ferguson broke out over last 24 hours with Real Madrid manager José Mourinho also up for consideration.

The selection of Moyes was not unexpected, however. In 11 seasons of managing the perpetually cash-strapped Everton, Moyes accomplished a 217-139-160 record, and it is widely believed that he could do more at a club with more resources, like United.
