According to NBC:

The freed children, a 4-year-old boy, and 16- and 18- year old girls, were being treated at a local hospital.

However, police found the bodies of the children's mother, 44-year-old Carmelita Stevens and a boy presumed to be her 13-year-old son, decomposing in the Trenton home where the children were held.

The hostage taker, 38-year-old Gerald "Skip" Murphy, was killed during the rescue. According to family members and law enforcement, he is not related to any of the children.
