According to CNN, The United States spends an average $150 million a year to house 160 inmates at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

In order to continue to house the inmates the Pentagon spends over $900,000 for each detainee at the facility. President Barack Obama has called for the facility to be closed down but the military is set to spend millions to upgrade the prison in the coming years.

The overhaul for the camp plans to include $50 million to renovate specific parts of the compound. Currently in the United States super-maximum security prisons cost the U.S. an average $60,000 - $70,000 per inmate while other federal prisons cost $30,000.

Ken Gude, the Chief of Staff and Vice President at the Liberal Center Progress Think Tank told Huffington Post that the current prison system is not only expensive but inefficient.

"... that may be what finally gets us to actually close the prison." he said, "I mean the costs are astronomical, when you compare them to what it would cost to detain somebody in the United States"

The cost of Guantanamo and all federal prisons throughout the United States is a growing concern for citizens and policy makers. As the Huffington Post illustrates the current sequester cuts and need for funding to support various government programs could create a shift in how money is allocated to prisons in the future.
