An unlicensed gold mine collapsed in western Sudan this week, killing at least 60 gold miners. Many miners are still missing, and rescue operations to find them are underway.

Hundreds of people have died in Darfur this year fighting over gold. According to France 24, this is because "production from unofficial gold mines has become a key revenue source for Sudan's cash-strapped government. It is also a tempting but dangerous occupation for residents of Sudan's poverty-stricken western region of Darfur which has been devastated by a decade of civil war."

The mine that collapsed this week had been closed earlier this year after fighting broke out between two groups over access to the mine. The mine collapsed on Monday when the miners began to dug into a dangerous area of the mine.
