Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokar Tsarnaev told FBI interrogators that the attack was originally scheduled for the fourth of July, the New York Times reported Thursday.

Tsarnaev and his brother Tamerlan, 26, who was killed in a shoot-out with police, allegedly also considered a suicide attack. However, they ultimately decided on using pressure cooker bombs.

The Times reports:

The brothers finished building the bombs in Tamerlan's apartment in Cambridge, Mass., faster than they had anticipated, and so decided to accelerate their attack to the Boston Marathon on April 15, Patriot's Day ... They picked the finish line of the marathon after driving around the Boston area looking for alternative sites, according to this account.

Authorities are still trying to determine what role Tamerlan's wife, Katherine Russell, might have played in the bombings.
