Summer break is finally here, and for many, it means a change of scene from the classroom to the office. If you’re lucky enough to have landed an internship, it’s time to extend that good first impression. Neon Tommy brings you a comprehensive beauty roundup that will keep you looking professional and polished, even in the summer heat.

The Makeup

The key to professional makeup is keeping everything as clean as possible, starting with a good base. While it may be tempting to use a powder foundation in warmer weather, a long-wearing liquid foundation is probably the better choice. Keep it light with a formula like Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation, which feels comfortable on the skin and creates a dewy look, even in harsh office lighting. If you want to wear eyeshadow, stick to neutrals for a contouring and highlighting effect that won’t distract. Cream shadows like Maybelline’s Color Tattoo line tend to have a more natural finish, plus they apply easily with fingers, saving time in the morning. And before you finish your makeup, take a few seconds to shape your brows. Properly filled-in eyebrows will instantly make you look more put-together, but be careful not to overdo it. Stick to a shade that matches your coloring, and apply with a light hand. Whether you use pencil, brow gel, or even eyeshadow is up to you. Just keep in mind that powders tend to look softer and blend in better with your brows.

The Hair

No matter where you’re working this summer, chances are the temperature isn’t going to be forgiving. Your best bet is to keep your hair out of your face, but tossing it into a topknot doesn’t exactly scream ‘professional.’ Dress up basic ponytails by wrapping a strand of hair around the elastic. Updos are also a great way to get your hair out of the way while still looking like you put a little effort into your look. There are plenty of great tutorials for easy updos on the internet, so do a quick search, avoiding the ones that look too bridal. And if you’re short on time, try a pair of Goody Spin Pins for a five-second bun that won’t fall out.

The Nails

Now is not the time to impress your employer with your nail art skills, however wildly creative they may be. There’s nothing wrong with bare nails at an internship, but sometimes you may want to dress them up a bit. Nude polishes are always a good standby, but stay far away from those that give you mannequin hands. Pick a nude that’s a shade darker or lighter than your natural skin tone, in either a or cream or shimmer finish. For lighter nudes, look for shades that contain a little bit of pink to brighten up your hands. If your workplace allows more colorful manicures, feel free to slick on a coat of coral or teal to celebrate summer. Just remember, caviar manicures and eggshell nails are strictly for the weekend.
